Wednesday March 28th, 2007

Well this is the 2nd last day on this trip until the long 40 hour drive home. We leave North Bend, OR around 10:30am and head out on US-101. We fill up on gas at a Shell station ... I say fill yer up ... diesel. The gas attendent kinda gives me a double take .. I say yep diesel. She says she has never seen a diesel car. Huh! Anyways we fill yer up and we are on our way. We arrive in Tigard, OR where Adrian wants to pick up the same 1TB drive that I picked up in Denver. He buys it and then head on down to the venue. Park the car behind the venue and just walk around.

Henry (Cottontech) is behind the bars where the buses are. We chat a bit. Johnny's drum tech (Mike) comes by and says hi. He's been reading this blog. :-) We chat a but more and then Adrian and I head out for some grub on the town. We find a pretty decent English Pub and settle in there for a bit.

Around 5:30 we head back to the venue, grab our gear and proceed to the lineup - there is a couple people in line already. We chat with them and I tell them of my trip. They are amazed at the distance I have driven .... almost 10000kms on this trip. As the line gets bigger we notice another person with taping gear ... Adrian goes back and talks to him and then brings him to the fornt of the line. Our friend Sarah shows up and joins the line with us. Doors open at 7pm. The Roseland Theatre has Airport style metal detectors (weird!!!) so I need to put our bag on the table and walk through the metal detector. They search my bag and I'm on my way to the balcony. Josh (the other taper) is already up there and he's grab the seats right in the middle. Killer. I set up my gear and Adrian decides to shoot from the balcony on the left hand side. Josh brings his friend up to man the gear as Josh is going to film from the floor. This is gonna be one killer video I'm thinking. I am running a stage shot and a pan-and-scan shot from my centre seat. Adrian talks to Henry from his seat and Henry says "so I have a heart" ... they both laugh. Guess Mike showed Henry the Internet thing. :-)

Sadies hit the stage around 8pm. The floor is kinda empty - turns out drinking can only happen in the balcony. Its all ages on the floor. The Sadies have a special guest during one of their songs that they haven't played on the tour. All in all a very good set. Travis seems to be having fun on the stage this evening.

The Hip hit the stage at 9:15pm and after the first four songs I'm thinking .. oh man same damn setlist. Of course I'm thinking now why did I continue on this trip. And then finally at song 10 they play Escape, then Puttin Down ... better ... During Meridian Gord introduces the Hip's special guest, Steve Berlin from Los Lobos on sax. Oh man I saw him play with the Hip in 2002 at the last of the HOB shows in Chicago. He also played with the Hip in 1997 on ARA. The show just keeps getting better and better at this point. The sax adds so much to the Hip's music.
Set ends with a rocking Blow at High Dough. I notice Sinclair leaning against one of the stage poles during the set as well. Pretty funny. Encore - they start So Hard Done By and I'm thinking ... yes! ... probably my favourite Hip song. With Steve Berlin on sax, this song rocks.
The cover tune is a Los Lobos tune called Don't Worry Baby. During the song I see Billy Ray between the barrier and the stage. He jumps up and places the lyrics to the song in front of Gord. The set closes with an amazing version of Poets. When's the last time the Hip closed the show with Poets. Simply an amazing show. Definitely a top 10 for me. This was show number 235.

We tear down the gear, say our goodbyes to Sarah and her fiancee. We talk with a few fellow fans and then make our way to the car and then back on the road. We end up stopping at a Days Inn off I5 and settle in for the night.

Tomorrow is the finally Hip show on this leg and this might be the last entry until I return unless I find the time on the road.

Tuesday March 27th, 2007

Well this is the last major travel day during this journey. And its a good one. We've decide to drive up the northern California / Oregon coast en route to Portland, OR. I know the drive is gonna be a good one but I had no idea. The drive is pretty amazing. Essentially once you hit Oregon you drive right beside the Pacific Ocean for a good portion of the trip. Luckily its sunny out so the view is amazing.

We ended up leaving San Francisco around 10am or so. 10 hrs later we arrive in North Bend, OR, which is about 3-4 hrs away from Portland, OR.

We stay at the Comfort Inn because they have High Speed Internet. That has become the essential thing on the road now.

We grab a bite to eat at a local chinese restaurant and then retire for the night.

Monday March 26th, 2007

Another show day. Its the show at The Fillmore. We wake up do some listening / tracking of our shows and then head on the town. I want to do to Amoeba Records which is located at 1855 Haight ST. I seem to remember from the last time that I was here that it was a bit of a hike from the hotel I'm staying at (Miyako Inn - 1800 Sutter Street). Its also drizzling out. I comment to Adrian that this weather isn't much different than what he experiences in Vancouver. It starts to rain quite hard. We finally arrive at Amoeba Records. Amoeba Records
has got to be the best record store every. It has everything, especially a wicked vinyl collection. I end up buying a Tori Amos Box Set, Neil Young's Greendale on vinyl, the latest Dears album on vinyl and a Sadies vinyl.

After Amoeba Records we head out to find a place to eat. We find a wicked "Brew" pub. Adrian and I both choose the same beer - Sara's Ruby Mild. For eats I chose a Waldorf Salad and Onion Rings for a side. After Lunch we decide to head back to the hotel. Since its raining hard,
we hail a cab and head back to the hotel.

Both Adrian and I are zonked so we both take a nap. 5:30pm we wake up and get ready. We both decide not to even bother bringing out video gear with us based on my past experiences at the Fillmore. No big deal we have so much video footage. Turns out from the setlist the Hip played that we made the right decision.

We head out around 6:10pm and walk to the Fillmore. When we reach the Fillmore there are two lines - one of Willcall, one of Ticket Holders. I see a face I recognize - Steve Brown. He's brought his son to the gig so he won't be taping tonight. Nick and his wife also show up. Adrian said he will reserve a spot up front for them.

Doors open at 7pm and they escort the line to the "security". They briefly look in my bag and say "we heard you were coming". Once in the venue I scope out the venue and say hi to Mark. Normally the Fillmore tapers section is where the Hip soundboard is ... the Fillmore staff say that I have to setup in the corner by the door. I say if I get permission from the Hip's sound guy to put my gear in the soundbooth area would it be OK to put it there. They seem fine with it.
I ask Mark and he says go ahead. Another Fillmore guy comes by and I say that I will probably be the only taper here. Ricky comes by and says I can't stay there - I tell Ricky that I got Mark's permission. He says he'll go check with Mark. I am a little offended here since I always ask Mark prior to invading his territory. I guess he's just doing his job. Oh well. No one bugs me after that.

Sadies hit the stage at 8pm and do pretty much the same set. And the Hip do pretty much the same set as the previous shows. The tour has degenerated in what happened in 2004 where the setlists started to be very similar. Its a good show in spite. The crowd is very enthuastic.
The cover tune for this evening is Bon Dylan's "If You Gotta Go, Go Now". Weird thing is this tune was played (the Dylan version) in the set changeover just prior to the Hip hitting the stage ..... ooops!

After the show, we grab our posters (The Fillmore gives out posters to each patron on departure). We talk with Nick and his wife and Billy Ray briefly and then head back to our hotel. We order some pizza and then hit fall asleep shortly thereafter.

Sunday March 25th, 2007

Today is another travel day. Kinda starts off with a bit of turmoil. Tony finally calls around 10AM and we are about to leave. I've been burned before with this type of stuff and Adrian and I decide that Tony will need to find his own way. He made that choice. The older I get the less I tolerate immature and immortal behaviour. So we head on route to San Francisco. I've done the I5 North route before so I chose to do the US-101 this time out. Its a longer route but a little more scenic. You briefly drive along the coast but most of the drive is interior California.

We stop at a roadhouse and have St. Louis Ribs and a sweet potato. The sweet potato isn't the traditional sweet potato that I'm used to. They put brown sugar and sweet butter (tastes like honey) on the potato. Interesting. The meal was very filling. Weird that I have my first BBQ in California and not Texas. :-)

We arrive in San Francisco around 7PM. We find the Fillmore. A bus is parked in front. Turns out a band called The Mad Caddies are playing there tonight. Since I have been to San Francisco before I search out the hotel I stayed at before. I find it. We get a room there and settle in for the night. I'm pretty tired from the shenanigans from the night before. Adrian and grab a couple beers and get hammered as suggested from Dave Holmes.

Tomorrow is the show at the legendary Fillmore.

We retire for the evening.

Tony ends up SMSing Adrian a threat during the night. It didn't have to end up this way.

Saturday March 24th, 2007

Los Angeles!!! Show tonight is at the El Rey Theatre on the Miracle Mile (Whilshire Blvd.). We were planning on going to Universal Studios for some fun prior to the show. Cost is $61 for entry I think so Tony says he rather just stay in the car because he doesn't have the money (geez what else is new). You'll see by the end of this entry that I am writing this is in pretty pissed off mood. Anyways we end up leaving the hotel around 1:30pm after I tracked a few of the past shows (Anaheim and Denver). We head out on I5 North. Traffic is the typical heavy LA traffic.

We reached Whishire Blvd and as we approach the venue we see one of the Hip's buses. Billy Ray is sitting in one of the trailers. Adrian starts to wave as we pass the bus. Billy Ray sees Adrian waving and I see him waving back in my rear view mirror. We laugh. After we park
the car we walk to the venue. We talk to Billy Ray a bit. He gives us a bit of trivia - supposedly LA is the city 4th largest city with Canadians. He goes off to look for some Canadian smokes. We head the other way to look for a bite to eat. We find a Big Boy and settle there.

Afterwards we head to the venue (its about 5pm) and there are only a few people milling about. We hear the Hip soundchecking. We hear the cover tune - don't know what it is - turns out to be Concrete Blonde's "Still In Hollywood". Cottontech shows up - looks like he just woke up or something. We exchange some insults. :-) A girl shows up who is an American. Her name is Heather. This will be her first Hip show. Very cool. She's a musician living in LA. Tony and Adrian go to the pharmacy (Tony needs smokes, Adrian wants a shaver). Heather and I walk to the Starbucks. Minutes later Tony and Adrian return and the four of us talk for a bit. At 6pm we return to the venue, get our gear and start to lineup. About 30 minutes later they assemble two lines - willcall and ticket holders. The show is SOLD OUT.

Doors open at 8pm. Adrian takes the spot to the right of the soundboard; I take the left. Tony goes up front. Heather takes her spot up front with Tony. Cottontech actually reserves a spot in for Heather dead centre. Wow! Turns out Cottontech has a heart and a name - Henry. :-)

Sadies hit the stage at 9pm. Pretty much the same set with one different song.

Hip take the stage around 10:15pm and really don't change the set up very much from Anaheim. Cover tune is Concrete Blonde's "Still In Hollywood".

After the show Tony informs us that he's going to stay with Heather. Adrian and I look at each other in bewilderment. We tell Tony to be back at the hotel by 8am. I comment that if he isn't he should be looking at Greyhound schedules. Adrian and I return to the car and say Tony's a big boy and can take of himself. If he doesn't show up he'll have to find his own way. Adrian and I are kinda pissed at this point.

We return to the hotel and grab a quick bite to eat at the local JACKASS!

I fall asleep and during the night I hear some rumbling. Turns out Tony did return but he ended up taking his whole suitcase and bathroom accessories. I find this out when I woke up around 6am. My thought is guess he's grabbing a ride or finding his way on his own.

Tony has totally ruin this leg of the trip for me (atleast this leg). He's trying to weasel his way back but I simply want no part of that clown. The dude still owes me money from the club shows. He owes Adrian money from those shows. He showed up in Las Vegas with no money saying that he lost $100US. So the first part Adrian was buying his food. Very disappointing to have someone on the road with you like that.

I'm pretty much done with the whole road touring thing and this definitely solidifies that I won't be touring around again unless I'm with people that that have proven realiability.

Friday March 23rd, 2007

A show day and a lounging around day. We take it easy and just play on our computers - edit some of the shows I've gone to. We leave the hotel around 2pm and head to Disneyland. We get there in 20 minutes or so and park the car. We walk around Downtown Disneyland, find the House of Blues and then grab a bite to eat. Afterwards we go to the AMC. We initially decided to go to Adam Sandler's new movie "Reign Over Me", but it has already started so we settled on "300". OK movie. No plot. Lots of action.

Its now about 7:10pm. We head to the car to get the gear. Then head to the House Of Blues. There is already a line assembled. We are probably 50 people into the line. Tony goes and schmoozes with security to inquire about taping. Adrian and I take our places in line. Tony returns saying everything is OK and we are fine to tape. While we were in line, it looked like the Hip's manager was looking for us. When he found us it looked like he had a surpised look on his face since we were not at the front of the line.

Line starts to move around 8pm. Of course once we hit the security check they ask if we have passes. We have to stand to the side and wait for clearance. By this time the line is quite large and I know that we have lost our "proper" taping positions. After 40 minutes of waiting, the Hip manager and a person from the House of Blues comes down and says audio only. We are OK about it. Adrian and Tony take the video gear back to the car; I head into the venue. I find a OK place beside the soundboard. I don't mind the position. Gives me the opportunity to fly the mike stand high (9ft).

Sadies hit the stage around 9pm. Good response but the crowd becomes quite talkative about 20 minutes into their set. I think I've seen the Sadies over 10 times now. I know most of the songs. I have four more Sadies sets to endure. Don't get me wrong, the Sadies are good, I just think they should change the setup a bit.

Talk with Mark (Hip's soundguy) during the set changeover. I ask him about him doing the sound for the Sadies. He says Sadies soundguy couldn't make it over the boarder. Sadies are paying Mark to do their sound.

Hip hit the stage around 10pm and play a different kind of setlist. In View starts the show off, which is usual. Family Band is also played early in the set. Sherpa is played. Hip's manager is rocking out in the soundbound area. Its very cool to see a manager having so much fun at a Hip. Mr. Soul is the cover tune played during the encore. Nautical Disaster is also in the encore
which is also usual. My Music At Work closes the show.

We talk to the Hip's manager a bit. He asks me about doing crew work for Wintersleep. I say I was the driver of the spare car and I also unload the gear from the van. I guess someone from the Hip camp is reading this blog. :-) We say our goodbyes and see you tomorrows.

We leave the venue and head to the car. We make our way out. Parking is free because we were at House of Blues.

We get back to the hotel. Tony calls around for pizza delivery. No one seems to deliver pizza after 12:30am. We walk over to the am/pm and grab some munchies.

Hit the sack by 1:30am.
